BD Is Not a Style Part III: Konstantin Grcic

Read Part I and Part II of this series.

Konstantin Grcic, one the most influential designers in the world, is recognized not only by the established, but admired by the young. He has his own style which cannot be compared to anyone else. The simplicity and functionality of his designs conceal a great lesson in technique and are even more than what meets the eye. The B Chair, debuted in Milan, was designed to complement the B Table from the Extrusion collection that Grcic designed for BD in 2009. This B Chair is made mostly of wood and has pieces of aluminum built in its structure allowing for the X-shaped legs and folding seat. This is a detail of genius! The variety of colors is not a bad touch either.

Cobi chair

Steelcase Cobi Office Chair accommodates the various movements of each individual sitter. Intuition is key when it comes to the supportive system of this chair; a weight-activated mechanism upholds perfect posture, without limiting the body’s full range of motion. 14 vibrant shades add life and color to the office. Men At Work: Rusted to Perfection

I walked into the studio of Men at Work in the Via Tortona at the Salone del Mobile 2010 Milan in the Zona Tortona and my jaw dropped. Not because of the complexity of the design, but because of the pure simplicity, details, and use of raw materials. Titto de Ruiter and Dennis Slootweg are Men at Work: two self-producing furniture designers from The Hague. Their works enhance each other by the attention paid to materials (particularly metal and wood), their traditional methods (the making of prototypes in atelier and adjoining workshop, the meticulous implementation and skillful production), their aversion to trends, and their passion for industrial quotations and detailing. The craftsmanship was superior and the material was raw to perfection.

Dennis Slootweg’s stunning pieces are practical, functional, and one of a kind. The furniture displays like an impressive statue with all the right details. His awareness of materials, craftsmanship and experimentation result in a language of forms that is both subdued and monumental, and in pieces of furniture with a clear and recognizable signature.

In Dennis Slootwegs collections, he searches for the metals that are rusted to perfection and brings them a new life. In his own words: “I like to play with expectations. Completely new products, like my Rust Cupboards made of old metal, thus still invoke a feeling of recognition almost immediately followed by the sense that there is more at stake.”

Gymnasium Collection by Søren Rose Studio

Sren Rose Studio, headed by Sren Rose, has designed a new collection for Mater, a Danish design brand who is best known for creating sustainable, eco-conscious, socially responsible design.

From the designer:

A History Lesson.

Remember the hardwood? The squeak of a sneaker. The sound of the whistle. That last second shot. The Gymnasium Collection takes its inspiration from a simpler time in our lives when victories were measured on scoreboards and teamwork wasn’t just for meetings.

The first incarnation of this line was launched in 2008 with our High School History Lesson series. Created from recycled gym floorboards, this limited edition collection used the graphic lines and simple silhouettes of the court to pay tribute to the simplicity and spirit of sport.

Today, it reinvents itself as Gymnasium, a mass-produced series that uses sustainable, eco-friendly materials like renewable pine and controlled Danish oak with water-based fixatives and varnishes. The result is a brilliant series, sold globally by Mater and crafted by Denmark’s oldest cabinet makers Bruno Hansen Carpentry.

Like its predecessor, Gymnasium honors its past while investing in the future. For every piece purchased, Mater donates a percentage of the profits to promoting sports in developing countries, allowing a new generation to be inspired to play and create.
